In my last entry here, I implied that my next one would be on the myth of paleoconservative & traditionalist "racism," and how those types of policies would actually benefit ethnic minorities. I still need to do that post, but it's Happy Birthday! I mentioned below that my recent trip to CPAC was the first time that I've ever seen a print copy of an issue of Human Events. The same is also true for the Sobran's newsletter. I first noticed it on the table for an immigration reform group, in the Expo Center at CPAC, and mentioned to the person there that that's the first time I'd seen a hard copy of Sobran's. He told me that they were at the table for 'Conservatives for Peace' [which is apparently now the name for the website I had known as "Americans Against World Empire"... or IraqWar.org... or AgainstBombing.com]. I went over and found that table; I had a good conversation with Mario, but I apparently just missed Jon Basil Utley, and [quite regretably] never got a chance to see or talk to him. (And I never asked whether he was in fact related to the distinguied anti-communist Freda Utley... I suspect that he is.) It was good to see the latest print editions of both Human Events and Sobran's, two excellent conservative publications that I had previously been reading only through their websites. Unlike the edition of HE that was being distributed there, I haven't yet looked through the issue of Sobran's that I picked up. [Nor have looked through, or possibly even opened, the copy of Their Lives which I got for signing up at the TownHall.com table, on the last day of CPAC (even though I've blogged about it before), and I've hardly looked at the intriguing book that YAF kindly provided us all a copy of, at their YAF Alumni event featuring the author, Peter Schweizer... I have however, read through portions of the latest "PIG" book [free excerpt - review article - Buy it now!], and I had a great conversation with the author Tom Bethell, after he signed a copy for me.] Anyway, I had noticed, some weeks ago, from the Sobran's website [www.sobran.com], that Joe's birthday celebration was coming up. I regret that I'm unable to attend today.  I remember seeing, a few years ago, that Mr. Joseph Sobran was born in 1947. I was surprised by how young he was; I think that may have had to do with seeing an item by Christopher Manion at LewRockwell.com, about an event held in Mr. Sobran's honor. I realized that Joseph Sobran must be an extremely-respected thinker and writer, and a movement figure. A National Treasure Back when LewRockwell.com used to publish his columns, the description bio at the bottom of his older ones used to note that Joe Sobran was referred to by Pat Buchanan as "perhaps the finest columnist of our generation" and by Lew Rockwell as "a national treasure." It is incredible that someone so esteemed (and this was like five years ago or more) was born only in 1947. When I saw that birthday notice [about Mr. Sobran turning the big 6-0], I remembered that someone who's very near and dear to me was also born in '47, and so I guess he would also be turning 60 (it was scary enough when I realized, eight days ago, that my younger brother was already 22!!)... I just realized before starting this entry however, that someone born in 1947 wouldn't be turning 60 this year... Duh!! So I guess that Mr. Sobran must actually have been born on February 23, 1946... and it turns out that he was. [At least that's somewhat of a relief for me...] Sixty is actually younger than many other established columnists and political commentators... Especially those of the traditionalist Right. I lamented last semester, when Jude Wanniski passed away - he was the third of my favorite conservative columnists to perish that year. (The others were Dr. Francis and Col. Hackworth.) Now, Messrs. Buchanan, Novak, Reese, de Borchgrave, Phillips, Phillips, Viguerie, Bork, Eagleburger, Hyde, Paul, Helms , and Sobran need to take good care of themselves [same with Mrs. Schlafly... though from what we've personally seen of her lately, she looks like she's set for many years to come!] - Some of us are trying, but it's a challenge [as we've discussed before] to maintain the "true-blue" form of conservatism within the people of our generation. (I was discussing this, once again, with Craig Burgers [and Marcus Epstein!] and others at CPAC. I was happy with some of the progress I saw... [For instance, there was a major pro-Tancredo contingent there, some of whom had come from Michigan...] But a lot of work still needs to be done.) Therefore, those stalwarts of the movement - one that has taken a lot of blows in recent years... but may be on the verge of a comeback (?!) - need to keep up their work for as long as possible. The future of our nation - and our citizenry as a whole - need no less.  Dear Mr. Sobran: Though I'm not able to be there for your party today, I want to wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Though I don't always agree with your viewpoints, your fresh and insightful perspectives provide a valuable service to not only the conservative movement and commentary arena, but to the forums of public discourse and thought of the nation - and the world - as a whole. Your work on non-political topics (such as literature, Shakespeare, and others) are also quite impressive; it is inspirational to see other Americans who are able to maintain a diverse array of expertise and a continuous stream of polemical output, and who have already gained so much recognition at a relatively-early point in their lives and careers. Please keep up the excellent work that you have been doing, and I hope to be in personal contact with you soon (as I was with a number of other renowned conservative commentators & leaders at CPAC and previous events). I hope that your celebration today goes well, and here's to many more great birthdays to come!! I had wanted, last night, to use this entry to share a poignant passage that I came across this past summer, while traveling to and from California. It was from a page in the back portion (I think) of Spirit Magazine. I had made a note to publish that short story in a blog entry, but in light of recent events, I think that it would be especially pertinent.  Unfortunately, I don't know right now where that magazine is (I took it with my from the Southwest flight [this was in June], but it could be anywhere now). I will try to find that, and post that piece here.The other entry (which had been on my backlog) that I thought would be especially pertinent, in light of recent events, is my post on why, contrary to common misconceptions, traditionalist conservatism and paleoism promote policies that will actually help minorities - rather than the other way around. I had been wanting to do an article on this topic for awhile (I think the Domenech-Auster feud may have prompted that), but due especially to Joe's recent situation (which he's guest blogged about here), I thought I should get that published soon. I can barely even type at the moment. There has been so much that has transpired within the past week or so, and even after CPAC, emotions and tensions are running high. Though things have pretty much subsided among others, in my mind, there is still so much that is unresolved, and points that I wish I could get across. My professor was kind enought to allow me to take my exam (this is a Political Studies graduate course, but it is mainly statistics and "econometrics") that was scheduled for Wednesday on Friday (I guess that would be today) instead. Nonetheless, I am not yet prepared... Things keep coming up, conflicts keep arising, and my mind is wrapped up in so much, that even when free time is available, it seems impossible to focus and concentrate. I am going right now to Denny's (I haven't eaten either), and hopefully, I can get some midnight cramming done [I don't mean with food - though some of that would be nice too]. The media is really loving this Cheeney shooting accident. Like it matters. They are acting like they are the 4th branch of government. The press loves to hate the Vice President. They think he is a mean, evil, calculating, wizard of Oz pupet- master of Bush one day and the next day, they blame Bush for everything. This is not a national story, this is wrong. Today as expected did not went as planned. We woke up later than planned. Then, by God's grace we got to CPAC, I met Fred Barnes and got his autograph for his new book and he was very nice and personal. I then met Pator John Hagee, got a picture with him and got a autograph for his new book. I then bought the book "Porn Generation" and got it autographed by the author Ben Shapiro, who incidently is only 3 years older than me and already a talk show host, author, and syndicated collumnist! Then I talked with the Draft Condi Campaign and I am looking to getting involved with that, even though she clearly has neo-con leanings. I volluntered for the "Winning the Future Campaign" and handed out a bunch of stuff for them and can get a meeting with Newt Gingrich. Out of boredom I went to a Leadership Institute training seminar. It ended up that I didn't get into the YAF Club 100 lunchin with Ann Coulter, however I met this hot girl and we hooked up. I then got all 3 of Michelle Malkin's books signed, including her latest one! We ran to go to see Ann Coulter. Her speech was offensive and rude to Muslims, which I couldn't care less about. The more I live and experience life, the more I become Islamaphobic. I'm scared of crazy muslim killers and I'm not ashammed to admit it. The only thing that is less safe than being with a muslim is driving with Ted Kenney. I then got my Ann Coulter book signed and took pictures of her signing my book. Then I hung out and waited because I got a discount on the Reagan Dinner in which I saw a bunch of people including: Tom Delay, Sam Donaldson, Jean Kirk Fitzpatrick, and the main speaker UN Ambassador John Bolton. The guest of honor was my hero Robert Novak. The dinner was very good and I enjoyed my company. And I met a nice guy who works for the Canadian Parliment and I think I would love a Internship in Canada. This trip has been hell. I am quiting the Soceity of Conservative Students. Every leader has *&%^$$up so bad, and I have clearly been cursed by God. I hope this huge blizzard doesn't %^*& us over so bad. I wish I could drink. I think even the religious right people in my group would get blasted after this situation. And Thank you for those who are at Georgetown University! God Bless. - - - - - - - - - - I was too busy, and too tired, last night to do a CPAC entry, about what transpired. I was thinking about just posting something with bullet points, like: - Michelle Malkin (again!) - Ann Coulter (!!) - Floyd Brown, Don Feder, Craig Burgers, etc... - Dr. Ergun Caner - From yesterday (Bob Barr, Gary Aldrich, Peter Schweizer, La Shawn Barber, Ken Yarmosh, Dan Flynn, Mark Harris, etc...) But I didn't have enough energy or time to mention the people who I got to personally meet and speak to. There is so much to share, about the past couple of days events... There is so much happening so fast - and the majority of the Conference is already over!! :-( I wanted to post something here right now, to note that... I was just able to: join the Bloggers Row!!! [The main TCSDaily.com person, who is in charge of allocating space - which I think was done beforehand - wasn't here, so the woman at the booth across from us just told me that since there was open space now, I could hook up! [Before I get kicked off], I need a photo of this moment. A Japanese television station is here right now actually, and is taping us as I type this. [Update (2/23/06): A photo of the Japanese tv crew, with pertinent info from a weblog I just found, which is apparently dedicated to CPAC 2006 only... And here is a neat (and humorous!) entry from another weblog I just found, that is from the previous day. I came over here, following the "Impact of Blogs" session with U.S. Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), along with Robert Bluey (he looks like someone my age, surprisingly!), who some of my readers may recognize from Human Events. I had told a Human Events intern, at the 2004 YAF 'National Conservative Student Conference', that I couldn't afford their subscription rates, as much as I love the publication. (It was neat yesterday to see, for the first time ever, an actual hard copy of Human Events.) When I mentioned that I would subscribe, but for the student expense issue, [We checked at the Eagle Publishing booth, as to the specifics of this, and it turns out that the rate is $25.00 for a full year [which consists of 48 issues]. I will be signing up today. - - - - - - - - - -  Nate Humphreys just came by, and is next to me now. I have been wondering when... This shows how fast things have been moving... I was just going to say how I didn't know when the SaveTheGOP.com meetup was going to be... And I was perhaps going to say something about how, while I did see Mark Harris (for the second time) in person [at the CLP Reception the first evening], and while I just met Nathan Humphreys - who is set up next to me, I was still waiting to meet Alex Brunk in person. Then, Alex came by (as I was hoping), and I got to meet him in person for the first time. In fact, he's been by again, before I could finish writing this. And at the same time, I am missing our very own John Cox (for whose campaign for U.S. Senate I volunteered in 2002 & 2003... He dropped out unexpectedly) speaking in front of the main CPAC audience. (He opposes the death penalty.) Fortunately, they have a television set up right in front of me, with a live feed of what's going on. [Unfortunately, the volume is too low, especially with all that's going on around here, for me to hear much... which I can't seem to be able to do anyway, due to...] I wish I could get a cup of whatever these people are on. Those who break our laws must be dwelt with and punished. Those who are hard working and obey the laws of the land will be rewarded because of our great free market system. My views on illegal immigrants are main stream not far right. I think those already here should be given a option to earn their citizenship through military service and citzen classes. And thats a way guarenteed way to instill a love for ones country, by serving it. I actually wanted to go into the military but i had that seizure because of how much I want to serve it. A few entries down, I blogged about how I recently started watching the show 24. A lot of other people were blogging about it, due to the Season 5 premier. At the end of yesterday, I had my IM away message saying that I felt like I was one of the characters on 24... Now I guess I know how Chloe, Tony, Jack, and the rest must feel. Almost from the moment I woke up yesterday, it was CPAC, CPAC, and then some more CPAC... I was hoping for the evening to be able to work on my pending coursework for the two courses that I will be missing this week, but that was way, way, way to much to ask...  And today was another one of those days.Most people often don't realize how much behind-the-scenes work is involved in planning just one event... Much less planning them again and again, during the course of a single month, and during the course of a semester.  It would take so long to describe what has transpired within recent weeks, for myself, and for others around me. Right now, several of us have to take either flights or trains out tomorrow morning, while trying to cram in packing, pending coursework, and for me, a bunch of other last-minute CPAC stuff. I will try to be blogging from CPAC [perhaps live-blogging an event or two?] - I don't know if they're doing the "CPAC Bloggers" thing again this year. Anyway, Christian Hartsock is still a guest blogger here, and I was going to add my friend Joe Grigoletti, also of the UIS CRs, as well, in the run-up to CPAC, while I knew I was going to be in a time jam. I didn't get a chance to add Joe yet [among other things that I haven't yet had a chance to do!! :-( ], but I think I'll do that now, and perhaps he can guest blog here as well, while we're both at CPAC! |
