Update (12/1): I can't believe it's December already - This seems way too soon... Anyway, I hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving. Please check out the entry below this one (thanks to Jared for linking to it) - it had been updated with some pertinent Thanksgiving material, like my entry from last year had.

And speaking of giving thanks, muchas gracias to the following sites for blogrolling mine in recent days:

Update: I have just discovered that Michael Boland, one of my fellow conservative collegiate bloggers, has been nice enough to blogroll my site, as has "All Hands and the Cook," which is a group blog that I just discovered today; it seems like an excellent site. And Sounding the Shallows, which appears to be a good traditionalist conservative weblog, has linked to here as well.

Update: Thanks to Prof. Lawren K. Mills (Martinis, Persistence, and a Smile) and AlexC (pstupidonymous) and Seamole's Log for blogrolling this site as well. If anyone else wishes to do so, I will likely list your site here as well.

And I have added the following sites to my blogroll [this is only a partial listing of them]:

--------------- original Thanksgiving Day entry ---------------

Click here to donate free food!

    Happy Thanksgiving!!

It's actually Friday right now, when I'm writing this post... I have unfortunately not been feeling too well today and yesterday. Anyway, my Thanksgiving entry from last year was pretty good, now that I look back at it. If you're still in the Thanksgiving mood (and for especially those of you who still have food left over... or still have other 'reminders' of the things of yesterday, you should be ;-), check it out!

(Josh also re-posted a speech from an entry last year - one that he made at the 2002 Bryan House Thanksgiving Feast. It's quite neat...)

As for this year, go over to the great WatchBlog site, check out the Republican column, and find out what this Republican is thankful for.

    Toys for Iraq!

I had noticed this earlier today, but Yale Diva pointed it out as well.

Note: I'm replacing the Google image that was here with a link to that image:

Here's the search that was linked to that image on Google's home page on Thanksgiving.

Aren't those special Google images neat?

Update (11/30): I need to post some more things for Thanksgiving. I guess this entry will do as the place to add these items.

    From the

Are YOU thankful to God? See what the Bible has to say about thanksgiving. (add your personal "Thanks to God" to those from around the world)

In my Thanksgiving entry from last year, I included several good pieces, including one from the great site by Richard J. Maybury on "the truth about Thanksgiving and free markets." I had also, in that entry, linked to William Bradford's 1650 classic, History of Plymouth Plantation. The Mises Institute's site has started their own weblog within the past year, and from this recent entry, I see that Bradford included in his book some commentary against the communistic political philosophy. (Now, looking at Maybury's article, I see that he was writing about that as well.)

This was posted on Wednesday, November 26th:

U.S. troops to read your personal "thank yous"

Also, I recently saw military mom Frankie Mayo on television, talking about her "Operation Air Conditioner" program... to help our troops overseas. (Her website has now been added to the "Support our Troops" section at the top of the sidebar.) They are now shipping heaters and other supplies to our brave servicemen and women in Iraq. Please go to their website - - and see if you can help out. I'm sure that our heroes would appreciate that.

Update: Notes on Thanksgiving Eve (11/26)...

My class today was waived, and I have a few days off now (although I have a ton of overdue work that I should get in ASAP). I will have a Thanksgiving entry for tomorrow, though. If you want to, please check out my Thanksgiving entry from last year (it's available in the archives... I will try to have the permalink posted here soon). That entry included a great piece by the beautiful and conservative Michelle Malkin:
    Thanksgiving Prayer 2002

And from our old friend Rush, who has been going through a tough time recently:
An Undoctored History Lesson About Thanksgiving

Also: There has been a great deal of discussion in the Blogosphere lately about a leaked memo supposedly proving a relationship between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. I have participated in some of that discussion (at several blogs), and I did a guest blog entry at 'Deux Ego' about that as well. Check out the latest entry of conservative writer Mark Horne... It links to a couple of pertient articles about this matter.

That guest entry of mine, on the "links" issue, includes the comment I posted at Oscar Jr.'s entry on this topic. That comment links to a blog entry of mine, some posts below, about Wesley Clark's ties to Osama bin Laden terrorists. There, I link to a lengthy comment post that I wrote a little while back at this blog entry of Patrick Ruffini's. That comment post deals with the topic of alleged 'links' between the Iraqi government and al-Qaeda, and also, if you scroll down past the first 10 paragraphs of it, I discuss the issue of links between the Clinton/Gore administration and al-Qaeda.

In a discussion at one of Josh Claybourn's entries on the WMD issue, I commented about the "links" issue... I dealt there with the supposed "discovery" of documents by a British newspaper that "prove" that Hussein and bin Laden "worked together." My comment post at this entry of John Adams also dealt with that.

Jared Keller, another young conservative blogger, is responding to some comments that I posted at his blog entries regarding this issue, and other topics. He noted on Monday that he was going to respond to my comments, and he has begun to do so at his blog. As of now, I do not have much time to respond to his responses... but I may do so in the future. His latest post ("Part 1" of his "response to Aakash") has some characterizations of my positions that are not completely accurate... For instance, I never claimed that absolutely no types of 'links' have ever existed between Iraq and al-Qaeda, and The Emperor New Clothes is one site that I rarely visit; I have not linked to it in very many of my writings. I should discuss this issue more. (But thanks very much to Jared for actually linking to my writings on this subject - find them also in the above paragraph of this entry.) Anyway, check out his blog posts about this, and the other entries at Jared's blog as well.

What should you do if your mom finds out about your blog? (My parents found out about mine some time ago...). Well, has an official position on this matter.

In the words of leading [pro-war] conservative blogger Josh Claybourn, "Not Again"...
If you haven't already seen them, please check out the updates to my second Oct. 19th entry (scroll below, or click here) which featured my two 'Deux Ego' guest blog entries (here & here) about the liberal, Bill Clinton/Jesse Jackson-type, statist logic that some war supporters are now trying to use in order to retrospectively justify the Iraq war. I updated that 10/19 entry this month with data demonstrating how that type of 'bleeding heart' logic is liberal in nature, and how conservatives, leftists, and others have all previously agreed that it is. I mentioned there how scary it is that so many bloggers - including those who claim to be 'conservatives' are playing these liberal cards in order to provide 'bait and switch' justification for the war. See there what one of the winning entries for the "Watcher of Weasels" Council was. As I have said before, many pro-war commentators have rightfully acknowledged that this type of liberal logic is wrong, and the Bush administration thankfully seems to not be relying on it too much - and instead focusing on their belief that the Iraqi regime was a major threat to our country, and to the safety and security of our people. (Reverting to that liberal logic would also be directly contradicting what the President, the Sec. of State, and Sec. of Defense had stated before this war, and would also clearly violate the conservative foreign policy principles that candidate George W. Bush got elected on... But it violates a lot more than that... as I've stated in that 10/19 entry.) It is troubling that so many people in the Blogosphere do not acknowledge what so many other war supporters have.

It's still Veterans Day at University Blog...
I have inserted below, under my first two Veterans Day entries, a third one, containing links to veteran and military community-related organizations and resources. (I already have some of them listed on my side bar.) It also contains links to some Veterans Day blog entries... including those from the blogs of war veterans James Landrith, Jo Fish, and Jeff Quinton. The 'Blog of the Week' feature is now 'Blogs of the Week,' and it lists the three of them - one libertarian, one Democrat, and one Republican. It is never the wrong time to show respect for our heroic current and former servicemen - and that is true in our regular lives, as well as in the Blogosphere.

    Saturday, November 22, 2003

I just found out (via Dizzy Girl) about the Friday Five, a popular feature for bloggers. While the blog entries (mentioned in the entry below) are still pending, here are my responses to the Friday Five (a day late!):

    1. List five things you'd like to accomplish by the end of the year.

Well, I would definitely like to finish all this class work, which I've mentioned before in the entries below. I have to do a dialectical journal for two of my classes - I don't know how many of you have ever done those before, but for this particular professor, they seem to be difficult, and especially time-consuming. And then, I will have to do a major paper about 'utopia,' or something like that... And I really need to get my plans set for next semester, and ascertain specifically what I going to do. (After this semester is over, I will have all but four credit hours that I need in order to graduate, but I still have to fulfill at least one specific requirement for my major.) I don't know what to put for my fifth thing... There are quite a few things to get done though. I will hopefully have more time and energy for some of these things during Thanksgiving break, and after this semester concludes as well.

    2. List five people you've lost contact with that you'd like to hear from again.

Well, I'm not going to name specific names here... but one of the first people who comes to mind is a classmate who I knew in middle and high school. She went to Brandeis University, and I think graduated after only three years. I am not sure what she is doing now... I haven't been in contact with her for some time. And then there is a great guy who I had spoken to when I used to go to UIUC; after coming back to Springfield though, I contacted him again when I found out that he was running for Urbana City Council. I assisted with his campaign, and although he did not win (he should have!) it was a good experience. I would like to speak to him again soon. (Aside from getting back in contact with a friend, I may also want to list him as a reference, since I have to apply for an A.S.T. ASAP.) Another guy who I met at UIUC - and continued to communicate with after I came back here - who I would definitely like to keep in contact with is a political activist and journalist who was the President of the College Libertarians at UIUC, but also later became involved in the Illinois chapter of the Republican Liberty Caucus. In fact, I can think of a few people from UIUC who I'd be interested in speaking to again, such as my roommate, and a couple of other people who were in my dorm. And there are also a few people from LLCC (the junior college next to where I am now) that I'd like to see again too.

    3. List five things you'd like to learn how to do.

Well, let's see. There's speed reading (that would come in very, very helpful...), more advanced web design skills, and perhaps how to play golf as well.... And I would also benefit from learning how to be more assertive and outgoing, and less anxious and nervous. (Was that more than just five?...)

    4. List five things you'd do if you won the lottery (no limit).

Well, this is actually a somewhat difficult question. I would first of all see if my family members needed help, and would give them anything that they felt that they needed. Then, I would save some of the money, and invest some of it (hopefully, I wouldn't lose a lot of it that way). I would donate money to the church, and also to certain good causes, and organizations. And of course the neccesary amount of funds would be appropriated for college... and possibly graduate school... and possibly law school (?) as well.

    5. List five things you do that help you relax.

I wish I was more relaxed... If anyone can think of some good ideas (not having to do with any illegal or unhealthy behavior, of course), please let me know.

    Notes on the Margin:

    Still busy...

Once again, I am sorry for not having posted new entries within the past week (I have many of them planned, or partly composed...). If you look below, though, you can see that I've modified my previous Veterans Day entry, and inserted another beneath it. Please take a look at some of that material. I have entries in the works about JFK, presidential assassination attempts, state news and views, and also Chief Illiniwek. I am also trying to juggle and manage several other things right now, but I will try to have several new entries posted here soon. Please check back soon...

Update (11/29/03): This is now one week past, but I just found, via my Illinois Leader e-mail, this report by Angela Wittman about Springfield's Faith and Freedom Rally. I wish I had been there.

See more articles by Angela Whittman and other constitutionalist conservatives here.

    Happy Veterans Day!!

God Bless all current and past military personnel!...

Thank you for all that you have done.

Thank you Mr. Landrith, Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Quinton, and Mr. Fish...
Thank you Tacitus and Adam... Thank you, Reverend Sensing...,
And thank you Sgt. Stryker, Sgt. Hook, and others....

Thank you for your service to our country. What you and others have done over the years has been much appreciated by your fellow Americans, and we must never forget all that our heroic servicemen and women have given to us throughout our country's history, and continue to give in current times.

Today is the day that we are supposed to be reflecting on these things, but we need to have this type of mindset all throughout the year. Our heroes deserve no less.

Thanks to all of our brave soldiers who have served our nation in the past, and those who serve today. God bless you.

    Illinois veteran alert

Just as the great conservative blogger (and army veteran) Jeff Quinton had a list of Veterans Day coverage from his area's newspapers, I am going to provide some of the local press reports for this great day from around here.

I will soon have this entry updated with a compliation of this.

For now, however, I will say what I saw at the start of the local TV 20 news for Tuesday night. They showed how many of our local veterans, military families, and other Springfieldians, were commemorating this day, remembering those who have fought in past wars, and those who continue to serve in the current ones. There was an event at the Capitol, and a parade as well... It was hoped that there would be a high turnout for these events, due to the situations regarding Iraq and Afghanistan. But some were surprised at how low the turnout was; it should have been greater. It was said that these events, however, took place during the day, when many people were at work or school, and that having those events on a weekend might be better.

They also mentioned one specific veteran's family that is in an uncertain situation on this Veterans Day.

I blogged about this hometown hero recently - See the bottom part of my Sept. 29th entry.

Many people, especially here in central Illinois, know about what happened with Maj. Harry Schmidt and Maj. William Umbach, the two pilots who were based right here in Springfield, in the 183rd Fighter Wing of the Illinois Air National Guard. As I mentioned in that entry below, Major Schmidt has bravely decided to go through with a court-martial to clear his name.

    Support Harry Schmidt!

I had previously linked to Major Schmidt's website - (it is permalinked at the top portion of my sidebar, along with other military-related and troop support sites), but I just came across the website of the 183 Pilots' Defense Fund... It is currently down, but maybe it will be put back up. Here's the Google cache.

I just noticed that Editor and Publisher has, as their website's current "Photo of the Week," a photo from my local newspaper, the State Journal-Register. See it at the Editor and Publisher website. Also, if you can click on that photo to enlarge it; this is the pop-up page that results.

    From the Illinois Leader:
    Editorial: Simply, "Thank You"
Guest Opinion: Are we keeping our promises to our veterans?, Dan Cedusky, Col, USAR, Ret.

Here is my Veterans Day entry from last year, archived at my second weblog. (That blog consists of my older entries on the issues of war and foreign policy; those entries are still available here, though.) My following entry, from two days later, contained some links to pro-soldier, pro-veteran organizations and resources.

Here are some links to good groups and websites:

    Veterans of Foreign Wars

    Disabled American Veterans

    U.S. Veterans Resources

    Vets Home

    Soldiers for the Truth

The American Gulf War Veterans Association

    National Gulf War Resource Center

    Gulf War Veterans Resource Pages

    Veterans Voting Block

    Vets for Justice

    Veterans for Common Sense

    Virtual Wall

    Stars and Stripes Museum Library

The great U.S. Congresman Ron Paul (R-TX), who served in the U.S. Army (as a physician) had a good column for veterans day this year. In one of my Veterans Day entries from last year, I included Dr. Paul's pertinent column from then as well.

Please also check out the news item that was featured at the home page of the National Gulf War Resource Center.... It is now here:
The Rest of the Story: Pentagon Limits Funeral Coverage; Arlington to Keep Reporters Away -11/14/2003 10:52:41 AM
Go here for the related news items on this unfortunate incident.

The controversy that arose had to do with the fact that the usual plan, for the war wounded veterans to be taken to the national Veterans Day events, had been cancelled for some reason - either by the White House or Walter Reed Army Medical Center - on the eve of 11/11. Steve Robinson, the head of the NGWRC, explained this situation in that above-mentioned report, which clarifies his quote in the Washington Post article.

The American WorldView Dispatch weblog has this recent entry with an article by Dr. Laurie Roth [] about how disabled veterans are "forced to pay their own hospital meal tab."
Are Moms Going to Have to Finish this War?

The great veteran blogger James Landrith had this entry on Veterans Day. Mr. Landrith was one of 750 American veterans who signed a letter to President Bush regarding military health and benefit issues, and the current situation in Iraq. See his following entry as well.

Jo Fish had this entry, among his several entries for Veterans Day, about how some of our reservists are having problems with work-related issues once they arrive home from overseas.

Conservative blogger Jeff Quinton had this blog post with a compilation of good Veterans Day entries in the Blogosphere.

It is several weeks past Veterans Day now (I am writing this part of this entry on Thanksgiving eve)... However, at the 'Blog of the Week' feature at the top of my side bar, I have now changed that from the cool Conservative Observer weblog to... That section is now the 'Blogs of the Week,' in honor of our veterans. I have featured there the three blogs mentioned above. One of them is a libertarian (small "l" - I don't know if he is a big "L" one as well), another is a Democrat, and the other is a conservative Republican. It is never too late to honor our veterans - in our regular lives, as well as in the Blogosphere.

From Blaster's post, I found this roundup of Veterans Day posts, in an entry by Jeff Katzman at It includes a link to this thought-provoking post by Armed Liberal at that site.

Blackfive's Veterans Day post links to Eric's entry (at his "Straight White Guy" weblog). Eric is a conservative, and also a U.S. Marine.

Rev. Donald Sensing had an excellent entry for Veterans Day as well; it is detailed and insightful. The Reverend is clearly a superb writer and a great blogger.
