    Rats.

I would like to have been posting new entries over the last several days. However, there have been many things going on... It has been difficult. This was not a good week to miss out on blogging though.

From Martin Luther King, Jr., to George W. Bush, to the 30th anniversary of one of the worst Supreme Court rulings of all time, there have been a ton of things that my fellow collegiate and conservative bloggers have been writing about. I have been dealing with several things in the past few days, and right now I am kind of nervous about something that I have to deal with tonight. I hope to have new entries very soon. Until then, please look through my archives, and also see the updates made to my last entry (below). Also, our friends at Hoosier Review have some good posts, as always. And for those who want more coverage and commentary about President Bush's State of the Union address last evening, TownHall.com and it's blog, C-Log, provide some good analysis and insight.

    Until later....

Update (1/31/03): Well, this certainly has not been a good week for me. I have so far avoided using any bad words on this blog, but as of now, let me say this: I feel pretty darn sh*tty... and have been like that for the past couple days. I know I should not be letting things affect me adversely, and allow them to impact me emotionally, but that is just hard to do. I have not been able to really focus or concentrate in class or in other things these past couple days; this is probably the worst it's ever been since I started school here. I was hoping for some writing on current affairs and the war situation, but as of now, I don't really feel like saying much. This is kinda what I feel like right now (but not exactly, and not with the same situation as Pink, whatever that was...).

I apologize in advance for the negative nature of this post update. I hope that things clear up soon - I will start blogging more when I start feeling better.., or perhaps even before then.

    Have a nice weekend!

January 18th - The day of protesting against war...

Today is the day that many antiwar protests are occuring throughout the nation (and the world). Unfortunately, many of these protests will probably be led by those on the far left, whose tactics make it easy for the neocons and warmongering globalists to label those who oppose war as "unpatriotic" or "America haters." This blog has been focusing on the conservative (and libertarian) opposition to war, globalism, and the Leviathan, and as I wrote in my Jan. 6th post: "If those leftists who are opposing the war with Iraq were really serious about persuading the public, they would either modify their tactics and themes, or else step aside and let the conservatives and libertarians lead the anti-war movement." Following the November elections, it is clear that the public is not in the mood for many of the underlying views of some of the war protestors; they will, however, listen to people such as U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE), the respected war veteran who received a higher percentage of the vote in the 2002 elections than any other Republican senator (among those who had opposition from a Democrat), and people such as Jack Kemp, the former GOP nominee for Vice-President. They will also pay attention to many of the Gulf War veterans and current and former U.S. military generals who have been opposing the war, such as General Anthony Zinni (the White House main man for Middle East affairs) and General Brent Scowcroft (who helped lead Operation Desert Storm, and was national security advisor to the first President Bush & President Gerald Ford), Colonel James Webb (Secretary of the Navy & Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Reagan Administration, who recently spoke against the war at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where the students and faculty were very receptive), and Col. David Hackworth (the famous American war hero, military expert, and "Defending America" columnist who has been decorated more times than anyone else alive). Below is some news coverage from the past couple days of the conservative and military opposition to the Iraq war:

    Republican businessmen oppose the war:
NY Times article --- Philadelphia City Paper article --- KS City Star --- The American Conservative
Finally! An organized Republican opposition to the war...

Update: FYI - Edward Hamm, who is spearheading the Republican business leaders' antiwar effort, is on the Executive Committee of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC). He has also earlier appeared on several lists by liberal groups for being one of those GOP 'fat cat' big-money donors. Mother Jones magazine has him listed as #144 in their compilation of the Top 400 political campaign donors. Perhaps now some of those people feel differently about him.

To read the text of that full-page Wall Street Journal ad mentioned in those articles (the one that the Republican business leaders signed), go here to Bob Goodsell's site, or see an edited version here. The ad can be downloaded in PDF format here. And you can see the ad as a JPEG image here. Mr. Hamm actually spent $170,000 to purchase that advertisement.

    From the Military:
    - Voices of Dissent on Iraq war from U.S. Military (and their families)
    - Gulf War Veterans sue companies for Chemical Exports to Iraq
(It's good to see in this news report that Scott Ritter, former chief U.N. weapons inspector, former U.S. Marine, Gulf War veteran, and current Republican, is still respected by the veteran community, even after the warmongers' campaign to discredit him.)
    - Veterans Group Calls for Rumsfeld's Resignation - American Gulf War Veterans Association press release
    - Troops Concerned Over Anthrax Vaccine
    - Gotta Have a War... Any War Will Do - Joyce Riley & Dave vonKleist, American Gulf War Veterans Association & The Power Hour
    - To Protest this war is Not Unpatriotic, Paul Connors, senior editor, DefenseWatch (Soldiers for the Truth)

    Good articles:
    - 'Strange Bedfellows' criticize push for war
    - U.S. anti-war movement growing; and it's broad-based...
    - 500,000 Go to Street in D.C. March, including Gulf War Vets
    - Most Media Ignore 160,000 Casualties from Gulf War, DefenseWatch (Soldiers for the Truth)

    Updates:

    From a few hours away:
Will it 'play in Peoria'? [the war with Iraq]
    Nope!

From our friends at Hoosier Review:
General Norman Schwarzkopf ("Stormin' Norman") is still opposing the war.
(And I just found that that there's a school named after him in Florida, by the way.)

    From conservative columnist Bob Novak:
Colin Powell still hasn't joined the warhawks

I spent Friday night watching women
...and unfortunately, Phil Donahue as well.

On Friday, January 10th, the Donahue show on MSNBC featured the "Women of the Right" - the guests for that episode were former United States Treasurer Bay Buchanan, who is currently president of The American Cause, and a mentor for Young America's Foundation; Radio America show host Blanquita Cullum, a conservative commentator and writer, and Kellyanne Conway, president of The Polling Company, and political analyst for CNN. I had sent out an e-mail prior to the show informing people about it; I had recognized Bay when they showed the previews for the show, and it was said on the preview that they would be discussing the potential war with Iraq, the new Republican Congress, and other issues. Before the show, I was thinking that it would be good to see Bay present a more correct conservative view on the war, in contrast to the neoconservative view. And that is exactly what happened. See below an excerpt from the transcript of that show. These ladies also talked about the pardons and clemencies granted by our terrible, horrible, corrupt Governor George Ryan. (Expect that to be the subject of one of my next posts...)

Full transcript of the Donahue show for Friday, Jan. 10th: http://www.msnbc.com/news/858656.asp

Excerpt regarding the potential Iraq war:

DONAHUE takes on the women of the right starting right now.

PHIL DONAHUE, HOST: Good evening and welcome to DONAHUE, live from New York City.
Tonight I’m surrounded by women, which is nice work if you can get it.

We are debating today’s big stories. Just hours ago, the Pentagon approved deploying 35,000 troops to the Gulf. The United States condemned North Korea for dropping out of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

A lot going on, so let’s get started with our panel of conservative women. Please welcome Bay Buchanan, president of The American Cause. Blanquita Cullum is a syndicated radio host from Radio America. Kellyanne Conway is here, president of The Polling Company.

With growing reluctant from our allies, is President Bush making a mistake by pushing forward with war?

    I ask you, Kellyanne.

KELLYANNE CONWAY, PRESIDENT, THE POLLING COMPANY: No.
    DONAHUE: Come on.
CONWAY: There are two things that have happened that have really changed Americans’ opinion on war, particularly women.
If you look back at the Persian Gulf War just before that, in 1991, 67 percent of men, 45 percent women said they felt comfortable in going to war. It was a 22-point gender gap. Now, it has changed; 58 percent of women, 56 percent of men are supportive of it, because two things have happened.
No. 1, the events of 9/11 are seared in our consciousnesses. We were that attacked on American soil. This is not just hypothetical. We know people in this world hate Americans and will live to see us die. And, No. 2, the ascendancy of our president as a trusted commander in chief. Even the majority of people who didn’t vote for him and may not vote for him a short year from now support him in this effort.
    DONAHUE: How about you, Blanquita?
BLANQUITA CULLUM, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Absolutely the president is doing the right thing. The funniest thing is..
DONAHUE: Where do we get these hawks? You just can’t wait to go to war. Holy cow. Happy days are here again.
CULLUM: No. Pardonnez moi, Don Phillipe.
Let me tell you. It was back in 1998 that it was not a Republican committee that was headed up by Warren Rudman and Gary Hart that came out with the information about what was wrong with Iraq and the potential to actually harm us and the millions of people that were going to die. And the thing that boggles my mind, in that report, during a Democratic leadership, during the fact that the president saw that, they said it was not if; it was when.
And you had members like Congressman Floyd Spence, now deceased, who said he couldn’t sleep at night, because nobody would deal with the heavy lifting. So, now we have it in our ballpark and people are saying hawks? The Constitution doesn’t care about the budget. They care about the national defense and the security of the country.
DONAHUE: I would just ask this audience, you certainly know Bay Buchanan. How does she feel about the war? Tell me.
    Don’t tell them, Bay.
She wants to go to war, right?
    UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes!
    (APPLAUSE)
CONWAY: Bay, you have a fan club. I love it.
    CULLUM: You go, girl.
    DONAHUE: Go ahead, Bay.
BAY BUCHANAN, PRESIDENT, THE AMERICAN CAUSE: I happen to take a totally different position here. I do not think that American soldiers, American military should be asked to go anywhere unless it is because of a threat to our-American individuals, our property, and our citizens.
And I do not see any imminent threat today whatsoever from Saddam Hussein. I think the president should be very cautious. I don’t mind that he talks and says that Saddam Hussein has got to step back on these weapons of mass destruction. I don’t mind the tough talking at all. But I don’t think you put our troops in danger when our people and our property are not threatened whatsoever at this time.
    CULLUM: Oh, Bay. Oh.
BUCHANAN: So, I think he has got to be far more cautious.
And I also think you have to start looking at what happens if we do go to war and what happens afterwards? And I don’t think that has been carefully thought through. I think we have an extraordinarily volatile situation over there in the Middle East. And we are going to just throw it way open and we don’t know what the response or what’s going to happen.
    CULLUM: I totally disagree.
DONAHUE: Aren’t you a little embarrassed that we are negotiating with North Korea and we’re going to attack Saddam?
CULLUM: Kim Jong Il, the guy that was dancing cheek to cheek with Madeleine Albright at the same time when you had defectors coming over here?
DONAHUE: Why don’t you want to go after him?
CULLUM: Well, I think we are going to have to deal with him because you have got the issue of plutonium and uranium.
Now, what is the little component that Saddam needs, Saddam and the evil two brothers, the sons? They need plutonium. Now, what is to say-they have had a longstanding relationship with Iraq. How do we know they don’t have the plutonium already?
    BUCHANAN: We do know.
Blanquita, the key is this. For the last 10, 12 years, we have absolutely controlled Saddam Hussein. We have had him. We’ve watched him. He has not threatened or used any of these weapons of mass destruction. And our own CIA suggests that the only time they believe he will use them is if we threaten his life or the livelihood of his own people.
CONWAY: He has used them against his people.
    (CROSSTALK)
BUCHANAN: That was not in the last 12 years.
CONWAY: Talk about a racist. Here’s a man who uses gas to destroy minority populations.
BUCHANAN: We should have taken him out 10 years ago.
    CONWAY: No doubt about that.

Update: I noticed this soon after post this entry: (What a coincidence...)

Guess who is currently the Young America's Foundation 'Speaker of the Month'?

Young America's Foundation is a great organization that has been helping conservative and Republican groups on campuses across the nation in their battle against the leftism which is so predominant in the academic area. I am a member of YAF's Club 100, which is the organization for college students who wish to be involved in conservative activism at their school.

Some updates with regards to my previous entry on war and conservatives:

After I wrote that post, which contained a Christmas Day anti-war column by conservative Republican leader Jack Kemp, a new column by Mr. Kemp appeared in my local newspaper (last Thursday). Here is Mr. Kemp's latest column, also opposing the war with Iraq:
The Danger of Stimulating Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation
Threatening war against Iraq while simultaneously dealing with the North Korean crisis through diplomacy may have the unintended effect of encouraging small, weak nations to obtain nukes and chemical-biological weapons as fast as they possibly can in order to gain leverage.

(From the current home page of Empower America)

Here are some other anti-war or pro-liberty columns by conservatives since I last blogged:

Former U.S. Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA):
Crimes before the fact, Washington Times
    Colonel David Hackworth:
SecDef Liar's Club, DefenseWatch, Soldiers for the Truth
    Doug Bandow:
Recasting the Constitution, The American Conservative
(Aren't Republicans supposed to be 'strict constructionists'?)
    Steve Chapman:
Bush Faces New Obstacles on the Road to War
    Justin Raimondo:
War Party in Retreat! (How sweet it is!)
    Gordon Prather:
    Setting Our Priorities Straight
    Pat Buchanan:
    U.S. Out of East Asia
    Charley Reese:
It's Time to Achieve Peace Through Strength
    Lew Rockwell:
Imperial Profiteering: Does Oil Require Blood?
    Paul Craig Roberts:
Will the Dollar Fall Before Saddam?

----> (Several of these are from the viewpoints page of Antiwar.com)

Update: The following TownHall.com columnists are opposing a war with Iraq:

(TownHall.com is the well known conservative site started by The Heritage Foundation.)

    Listed in alphabetical order...

Doug Bandow - Pat Buchanan - Steve Chapman - Jack Kemp - Bob Novak - Paul Craig Roberts - Jacob Sullum - Jude Wanniski -

These other columnists are also listed on the bottom of the TownHall.com columnists page. They are opposing the war:

William Anderson - Radley Balko - Arianna Huffington - Charley Reese - Joe Sobran -

The following WorldNetDaily.com columnists are opposing the war:

Chuck Baldwin - Pat Buchanan - Harry Browne - Col. David Hackworth - Ilana Mercer - Gordon Prather - Maralyn Lois Polak -

    Monday, January 06, 2003

From correspondence at the Hoosier Review blog:

Brian Balta, a left-of-center columnist at Hoosier Review (the Indiana University student blog) who is opposing the war with Iraq, posted an OP-ED from the New York Times by Warren Christopher; Mr. Balta entitled that blog entry: "An ex-Sec. of State Agrees with Me." See my rather lengthy response here at the comments section of that entry (it is the 4th comment; scroll down or click here for the direct link to my comment). In my comment post, I point out the conservative opposition to the war with Iraq. I included a link to Jack Kemp's OP-ED column on Iraq which was published in my newspaper on Christmas Day. It is also currently the second article featured at the home page of Empower America, the conservative organization headed by Mr. Kemp.

    Call Saddam Hussein's Bluff
A persuasive case has not yet been made to go to war with Iraq.

    Excerpt:
I agree with Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who said on "Face the Nation" Sunday that a persuasive case has not yet been made to go to war with Iraq. As the senator wisely observed, "This is not just about Iraq ... it is about the entire world." Invading Iraq will have reverberations around the globe, and we should not go to war based upon the reports of Iraqi defectors or other indirect evidence. I believe by sending our intelligence agents into Iraq, we have an opportunity to call Saddam's bluff and see firsthand whether or not our suspicions are true...

From my comments in that above-mentioned Balta post:
...Wouldn't it be nice to have had Jack Kemp as Vice-President currently, rather than a warmonger like Dick Cheney?

Jack Kemp was a great conservative leader in the broad-based antiwar movement during the Clinton Administration... See here the press release in which Kemp blasts Bill Clinton's illegal war in Kosovo (along with many conservatives, libertarians, and liberals), and here, where Mr. Kemp questions President Clinton's 'wag the dog' bombings of Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Once again, you can read my full comments to Mr. Balta's post here. If those leftists who are opposing the war with Iraq were really serious about persuading the public, they would either modify their tactics and themes, or step aside and let the conservatives and libertarians lead the anti-war movement. I have mentioned before (see my Oct. 10th blog post) about how opposing this war is consistant with traditional American conservatism, and how it is the neoconservatives who have been the main ones pushing for endless warfare and the establishment of a "New World Order." I also gave a summary of this in a comment post to a Nov. 11th Campus Nonsense blog entry by a U of Iowa College Republican. It mentions different groups on the Right which are supporting the war, and those right-wing groups that are opposing the war.

    Let it be known:

    This is a neocon war.

    Happy New Year!!

Best wishes to all for a happy and successful year!
